"Blue Lotus" is not necessarily one of "Wordsmith" Vaughn Benjamin's more cryptic tunes, but this song remains powerful in its simplicity, and I think it's a great way to show love for two of my favorite tribes on Hive, the Natural Medicine and ReggaeJAHM communities, where I publish the weekly Plant Power curation and JAHMin' Posts of The Week.
ARTIST WITHOUT COMPARISON
The "Wordsmith" Vaughn Benjamin is without comparison, and his thorough study of world history, etymology, anthropology, religion, spirituality, chemistry, physics, the human condition, and so much more, is very evident in his music. His music and message remain a living testament still full of wisdom and unsolved mysteries.
There is no studio-recorded version of this song that I am aware of, but that's not rare for Vaughn Benjamin at all. Below is a live version from an album and also a live version with video, although you'll have to start the video at around 12:35 to catch the beginning of "Blue Lotus."

I-ncient African-South Asian Connections
Right off the bat and out of curiosity, I decided I should do a YouTube search for "lotus song," and I found a huge selection to choose from. However, Vaughn Benjamin's "Blue Lotus" honors the lotus and it's historical importance Despite it's simplicity, it carries some serious messages and questions for humanity at large, namely the opening line(s)...
"Of the Nile (repeats)..... Blue lotus of the Nile, water lily, water lily. Who was that Nazarite tribe? Speak the truth fully (repeats)
Vaughn sings of the Nazarite vow and its importance to the most HIGH, and alludes to the Ethiopian roots of of all modern religions. Although Egypt gets more international historical attention, I think that's a bit of Arab-washing of Abyssinian-Kushite history.
The source of the Nile river is in I-thiopia, and information and wisdom always flow downriver first, bearing in mind many Egyptian pharaohs were actually I-thiopians. Also, the Puntites who likely created the foundation(s) for Hinduism, were expert ancient I-thiopian sailors who landed in India before a caste system (created by the Aryans) existed, and are most likely the ancestors of the Dravidians.
The East African and South Asian ancient historical connection can't be denied, neither I-thiopia's influence on religion, culture and cuisine, in South Asia. There is even a Kemetic yoga predating yoga's origins in India, with hieroglyphics in modern-day Egypt serving as very compelling evidence, as well as the Kemetic spiritual beliefs associated with these poses (asanas).
