Bless up ReggaeJAHMers, I would to share with you one of my favorite reggae bands, Alika y Nueva Alianza, spearheaded by a conscious bi-lingual sistren with some serious talent.

Alika's Musical Background

This Uruguyan native turned Argentinian reggae sensation didn't start out in the reggae genre. She was one of the original members of Actitud Maria Marta, an all-female hip-hop group founded in 1994. The band is still active to this day, albeit without Alika and some other former members.

Enter Alika y Nueva Alianza

In 1999 she entered the reggae and dancehall world by creating her own band, Alika y Nueva Alianza, focusing on conscious, with many tunes praising H.I.M. Haile Selassie I. Since then she has produced several albums and mix tapes, many of them free to the public for downloading.

Alika's first music video - **Mis Enemigos** (*My Enemies*)

Since then she has produced 9 albums, all of great quality. Whether experimenting with Mexican or Jamaican influences, even an orchestra, she is always innovating and contributing her unique style into every track.

Alika mixing it up with an orchestra - **Contra Todo Lo Negativo** (*Against All Negative*)

I've followed this band since around 2002, not long after their first album, so I've seen how they have musically matured with time.

Alika burning out the CIA and FBI - **Galang**

Alika's music stands the test of time, and she manages to bring an upbeat feel to what are often some very confronting lyrics.

Alika on the streets with dancehall style - **Para Bailar** (*To Dance*)

A lyric from the song Contra Todo Lo Negativo that has always stood out to me is...

**"La música es visión no competición."**

Alika experimenting with Mexican influence - **Dem Got No Love**

She hasn't let the fame get to her head, and the messages in her music remain uncompromising and as conscious as ever, something increasingly rare in the music industry.

Alika w/ La Liga - **Tengo El Don** (*I Have The Gift*)

While Vaughn Benjamin is still responsible for 90% of the music that enters my ears, Alika y Nueva Alianza is easily my second favorite band. My Spanish is something that needs major improvement too, so listening to Spanish language music definitely helps.

Many fans of Jamaican reggae often overlook artists from Latin America, especially those performing in Spanish, but Alika has made great leaps in transcending those barriers, putting Argentina on the map as a reggae heavyweight possessing many talented artists.

En Vivo

This band is one of the few acts I've wanted to but have never seen live. Even though I now live in South America, we are very disconnected from the Latin American scene here in Dutch-speaking Suriname, so it's understandable why they haven't played any shows here.

Alika often tours in Mexico, so I hope one day I can make a trip their to see a show while in the USA on one of my odd visits.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse at one of my favorite artists. Give thanks and bless up!
