I always make Monkey-B her favorite foods on her birthday, and this year she wanted bruschetta with fusilli all’arrabbiata, so I prepared it while she was at school.

👨‍🍳 Simple Can Be Special

My family is a pretty simple gang, and we've never been in the habit of spending big money on birthdays, most likely because we don't have the big money. My youngest daughter has always appreciated my time more than anything else, so I told her for her birthday this year that I would free up a day just to cook whatever she wants and otherwise be available. Luckily Monkey-B values time so much more than money, just as I do, and we also have similar taste buds.

Mostly I cook Indian food, and the two of us generally prefer to eat like this, but arrabbiata sauce is something that Monkey-B will eat anytime, anywhere. Any kind of pasta with this sauce is one of her favorites, and that's what she asked for this year on her birthday, surprising me with a surprising simple task compared to the more complex and labor intensive Indian food I usually prepare. I don't care much for Italian food, but this arrabbiata sauce is basically just a spicy marinara sauces, I think the word means "angry" in Italian.

Because Italian food is uber simple I decided to make some bruschetta as well, something Monkey-B and I both love. Instead of making it the Italian way, I make good ole' American style garlic bread first, then put the bruschetta on. It is really hard to not eat garlic bread and let it become bruschetta by the way, it just stares at you and begs to be eaten. Big sister @srey-yuu, aka Sreybledore for Harry Potter reasons, hates tomatoes, but gladly devours them in bruschetta form.

In addition to the Italian-ish meal I prepared for my little one on her special day, my wife also made a vegan cheesecake like the ones we used to sell in our restaurant back in Kampot so many years ago. It was a memorable birthday I hope, November 1st, the day she was actually born, but due to the hospital not having any birth certificates at the time, her government birthday is the 11th of November. So as I write this post, she is 10 years according to the laws of nature and the laws of man.

I guess this could've been a recipe post, but honestly Italian food is so simple, you can google either of the dishes I made and easily prepare them at home. The main point of this post is that my little girl is 10, growing up way too fast before my eyes. I give thanks that she still likes to give me lots of hugs and cuddles every day, so for now she remains my little girl.
