Usually this time of the year it's nothing but rainy days here in the Cardamom Mountains, but today's commute to school was filled with blue skies.
Studying Requires Energy 😴
Once a week I usually bring the neighbor's boy, Ah Boom, back home from school for various reasons, and he is asleep within 5 minutes every ride. He's pretty naughty because his parents don't spend much time teaching him how to be a good human, and quite often he'll have a fight with Monkey-B, sit as far as possible, then be sleeping on her shoulder a few minutes later.
You can't see it in the photos either, but I've been hauling back 400kgs of cement mix each time I return from Thmor Da, the small town where our daughters go to school. This adds an extra 30 minutes to the uphill drive back home, mostly done in 2nd gear.
Hold The Rag Doll 🧸
Ah Boom bounced all over the place like a rag doll despite us going very slow. Even asleep he can't stay still, so Monkey-B often braces him by the back of a neck like a puppet to keep him flopping around like a rag doll.
Now that the rain has been falling heavily for many weeks, the illegal but happily tolerated deforestation via arson has been replaced by green mountains and blue skies, quite a change from the brown and fires of a few months ago.
A Slice Of Paradise 🥹
Life certainly isn't easy for us, but we feel thankful to own a small piece of land here in Cambodia before we've become too old to make use of it. We did have to shop far from any place most tourists or Cambodians will go, but we have no regrets despite all the hardships that've come along with this choice.
I tried to snap a pic of a particular road sign that always make smile, not sure if you will be able to see in the pic. It reads "END ROADWOR," no need for a K on the end, and no evidence from UV fading that there ever was a K.
Deer, Really? 🦌
I've never seen a deer here yet, but there is a sign that would make you feel you need to be on the lookout for a possible collision. I would be honored to have my tuk-tuk destroyed by a deer if it meant seeing one of what are likely 20 left in the whole country.
