A few weeks ago a German friend of mine that lives here in Cambodia brought a friend and her kids to visit our place while on holiday.
🏜️ Dry Season = Sad River 😔
Several years my family and I lived in a touristic town in Cambodia called Kampot, and I still have several friends there. One of them is a German physician that splits his time between a work life in Germany and a farm life in Kampot, Cambodia. A close friend of his from university came to visit from Germany and brought her two boys along, and he brought them all to our place because he knew the kids would enjoy it very much.
The oldest boy is obsessed with fishing, and he even brought a fishing pole with him, so I made sure to try and find some fishing spots along our river. Unfortunately it hadn't rained for a few months prior to their visit, so the river was brown, full of algae and shallow, stagnant water. On top of that I think the fish up here are too small to be caught with hooks, but fishing with a pole is more about the experience than the fish caught.
🚫 All Mud, No Fish 🐟
I managed to find someone in the village with a handcast fishing net, so I borrowed it to use the following day in case the fishing pole was a failure. After we gave up on the muddy shallows, we all headed to the Thai border in our tuk-tuk to pick up my daughters from school and go swimming further downriver where the water would be deeper.
We made a rough plan for how to spend the rest of the day, practiced skipping rocks, then climbed back up the hill where we had parked the tuk-tuk at a neighbor's house. From there it takes about 45 minutes to reach the Thai border in our tuk-tuk, 30 minutes by motorbike, or 15 minutes by car.
🚧 Hello Thailand 🛃
I've shared lots of pics on my blog of the border gate with Thailand, and it's a destination that I often take visitors to. There's something novel about a border that isn't open for crossings, and it makes for interesting pics. It's scheduled to become an international border crossing some day, but since COVID this border hasn't even reopened for Thai-Khmer crossings.
The boys liked the sight of the soldiers, guns, camouflage, and the general manly atmosphere of the border gate. The guards know me well and trust us not to do anything stupid, so we can take photos that make for good memories. Before we left I was able to lift up one of the boys and point out a Thai flagpole that can be seen above the Thai border guard stations about 100 meters away. We then rushed back to the school, picked up the kids and went swimming at a more suitable location.
