Yesterday was Srey-Yuu's birthday, and even though it was a school day, I tried to make it a special day for this teenager.
The Greatest Gift Of All 🛌
After picking up the girls from school and arriving back home, I asked Srey-Yuu what she wanted to do on her special day. It was not much of a surprise that she chose daytime sleep as the greatest gift of all, combined with not having to wash any dishes. Next to the bed is Monkey-B in her reading fort, where she likes to lay inside a suitcase while flipping pages.
Cabbage Kofta Birthday Burgers 🍔
While Srey-Yuu was sleeping and basking in her thirteen-ness, I whipped up some veggie burgers, basically besan and minced cabbage with a bunch of spices, then formed into patties and shallow-fried. After I finished the burgers, I asked Princess Srey-Yuu if she wanted to wake up and eat or continue sleeping, and she chose to continue sleeping, so Monkey-B and I ate a few of big sister's birthday burgers.
An Uninvited Guest 🐸
It's been raining almost nonstop here for at least a month, and I haven't heard the sounds of forest creatures at night ever since the constant rains began. Our house has become a refuge for various creatures, and this little tree frog must've been absolutely freezing while perched on this bare aluminum window frame. I didn't want to to bother it because it was obviously using all of its energy to stay warm, and was oblivious to my presence.
From Green To Brown 🌧️
The blue stuff falling from the sky usually makes things greener, but too much of it makes everything brown. I will give you the latest flood news in my next post, but let's just say we are minus one hammock hut, and possibly two. Our neighbor's house is on the brink of collapse, the foundation of his house now dangling over the edge of a newly made mud cliff.
Birthday Girl Just Wants To Draw 📱
After waking up from her birthday slumber, Srey-Yuu began drawing in Sketchbook, and after several minutes of this I forced her to eat a cold birthday veggie burger.
Teenage Confidence 😋
While she was eating her birthday burger, I noticed she had the confidence of a teenager now, no longer a little 12-year-old girl. She'll probably read this post and not like my dad humor, but she'll also forgive this easily because she's this post's 100% beneficiary.
Harry Potter Yo' 🪄
I know she loves Harry Potter movies than just about anything else that can be viewed on a screen, so I found a sketchy website full of spam ads that eventually produced the one she was hoping to watch. With pots in place to catch all the raindrops from the leaky roof, we began our viewing party while being careful not to kick the rain pots. It may not have been an extravagant birthday, but I did my best to give my time and day to this new teenager.
Happy Birthday Srey-Yuu! I love you more than you'll ever know, and this weekend we'll have some more fun without having to worry about school the next morning.
