Every now and then I go to YouTube for a brief comedic escape from my daily routine, and Japanese public pranks are among my favorite rabbit hole to go down.
👩⚖️ How Is This Stuff Legal?
After wasting a good amount of time on the ole' Japanese public prank YouTube rabbit hole, I found myself wondering how this stuff is legal. Well, after watching 5 of my favorite pranks, I figured I might as well share them with you all because I am not sure if my mostly SE Asian reader base is familiar with these viral videos. There is a language barrier of course, and sometimes these videos have subtitles, but honestly they aren't needed, the pranks pretty much explain themselves.
After my little YouTube rabbit hole timewasting session I decided I needed to make the experience educational in some way. I did some googling about Japanese laws and how they are able to do such extreme pranks on random people, apparently without any major lawsuits or compensation payouts. Japanese tort laws allow people to sue for large amounts if there is major physical harm, but for emotional distress the payouts are very small, often not even enough to pay for the lawyer, so most people don't sue like they would in the USA.
🗾 Only In Japan
This legal framework lays the groundwork for all the mind-blowing pranks that have gone viral from Japan. There were shows in the USA at one time like Punk'D and few other ones I can't remember the names of, but I think all these prank shows were eventually cancelled because it became too litigious to keep them on the air.
My favorite pranks always involve large crowds or groups of people coordinating together to target one specific person. The level of creativity is mind-boggling, and I can only imagine the things said during the brainstorming sessions that produced these outlandish pranks and scenarios.
Japan is normally a very conservative place, and the Japanese people are renowned for their respect and self-discipline, but the public pranks they pull on hidden camera tv shows seem to defy the Japanese stereotypes people have of this country. There is no end to this genre of clips once you go down the rabbit hole, so have fun if you dare folks....
