Our first family visitors to Steung Kach are enjoying their stay so far, and creeksploring was one of the first things we did.

🗣️ Dad! Help!

My nephew-in-law and his wife are visiting from Siem Reap, but strangely enough my nephew Mayong lives and works in the Caribbean at an exclusive Cambodian resort. When we were stranded in Suriname for nearly three years, he was surviving the pandemic in Turks & Caicos at a Cambodian resort with no Cambodian VIP guests.

After arriving and getting settled, the biggest curiosity was the river and all of its tributary creeks. Mayong and his wife joined me in some particularly cold post-rainfall water, and Monkey-B shouted out the usual commands for me to assist her in descending from the bank into the river.

As soon as everybody was in the water and somewhat adjusted to the relative cold, we decided to venture up the main tributary creek because it was running clearer, cleaner, and colder today. We were joined also by one of neighbor's kids who borrowed Srey-Yuu's life jacket. Srey-Yuu chose not to join us because she knew how cold it would be.

After some goofing around, we began to climb the rocks and venture into the forest for some water cold enough to take our breath away.

Explorer Pov 🕵️‍♀️

@sreypov went up first and asked me to take several different shots of her just being "natural" in nature. She usually tries to get insect photos, but this day's rain had sent all the insects into hiding.

I will never get tired of swimming and soaking in all the nooks and crannies of the creek, and what brings me the most joy is the white noise of the unending rapids. Visitors notice the delightful soundtrack immediately, but I sometimes forget about it because we've lived here for long enough to get accustomed to it.

It's Really Cold 🧊

After taking a Swiftwater Rescue Technician course in Colorado in mid-January while only wearing a farmer John wetsuit, there is no cold water in Cambodia too extreme for me, but there are days where this mountain water can take your breath away for a few moments. It still catches me off-guard sometimes.

Mayong was obviously attacked by the cold water in this shot, and he let out an audible scream. I sucked in my cheeks and breathed tiny breaths, and eventually got used to it. It is amazing how much colder the water gets only 50 meters from the main river, and the higher you go the more breath-robbing the water becomes.
