RAIN.png

Every now and then we get a reprieve from the constant rains, but this is the microclimate here in the Cardamom Mountains.

Indoor Entertainment 📱

We get plenty of outdoor fun here, but when the rains come it's usually along with lightning and thunder, so there is little to do other than wait for the weather to pass. The door jam is the place with the best cell phone signal, so it's also the best place to have a chance at watching a little Netflix or YouTube.

Rain + Clay = Stay Away From The Mud 🚷

RAIN.png

The dirt here is mostly clay, and so naturally when it rains it becomes slicker than ice and stickier than chewing gum. Combine this with the fact that we've just recently backfilled the land, the new soil is very soft, and there is no reason to even try walking anywhere.

Eventually we'll have to work some organic matter into the areas we'd like to grow grass or do some gardening, but I think a good first step will be to get some protective covering over the mud to prevent the direct contact with rain. There is a lot of super tall wild grass around here, and I think my wife and I may soon go on a harvesting spree, then scatter it evenly over the mud, providing a good base layer so that we can at least walk around without getting our shoes sucked off our feet.

Mud Has Got To Be Good For Something 🤔

When I was a kid one of the first movies that terrified me was Predator with Arnold Scwharzenegger , aka the Governator. Although I think the setting was somewhere in Central America, the forest was very Cambodia-esque, and Arnold was able to hide from Predator by covering himself in mud, so perhaps we could recreate some scenes from this movie if we get too bored.

Sidenote - Predator was actually Jean-Claude Van Damme just in case you wanted some random movie factoids, that's why it/he had such good fighting moves.

No Need To Pump 🚰

water.png

Our has no running water, so all water chores are done on the side of the house by the rain barrel or in the outhouse where there is water basin complete with custom high-tech rainwater catchment system. As long as the rain falls occasionally, I don't have to go down to the river and pump it uphill in what is a slightly dangerous task.

What you're looking at is a plastic pipe with a wedge cut out for the roof panels, and connected to that is an algae-filled water ancient water bottle fixed to an old hose that will turn to dust if you touch or even look at if for too long.

Enjoy It Monkey-B ⛈️

While working on this post, in front of me I noticed Monkey-B playing with the rain, and I managed a natural shot before she turned around and saw me taking photos.

After the lightning and thunder ended, Monkey-B wanted to go explore the mud with her new boots. She was very satisfied with the symphony of squishy sounds she could make with her boots and the sticky mud.

After we both reveled in a bit of mischievous laughter, we gave thanks for beauty of life and the ability to make inappropriate sounds with a bit of rubber, mud, and suction. It's science bruh'!
