Today was super hot, and after nearly 7 hours inside a steamy tuk-tuk driving, working and waiting, I needed a shower at the river, and Monkey-B joined me.

Rain + Heat + Confined Space 🥵

The month is almost over and I will soon no longer be taking 8 kids to and from school each day. It may not sound like a big deal , but it consumes me 6 days a week from 5:20am until the afternoon, so it's nearly a full-time job on top of an already full schedule. I'll be glad for the extra time, but also not looking forward to paying my neighbor $200 a month for the service because that's about what my wife earns with her blog each month, and I had originally bought the moto for her to take the kids to school, so no we're out the cost of a moto and monthly transport expenses.

Another reason I'll be glad to stop taking the village kids to school is that their parents never paid a fair share. One could argue that they are poor and have pity on them because they live in small houses, but the truth is these parents have plenty of money to gamble, drink, smoke, and a few of them even purchased new $3,000 motos while not paying me enough to cover diesel costs. I don't want to continue freeing up more money for alcohol, so I hope the kids will eventually learn to criticize their parents for failing to accept parental responsibilities.

On this day I didn't really want to swim, just needed a show because I had been sweating a lot in the tuk-tuk while waiting for the kids. As usual, we took soap, the bathroom scoop, and a washcloth to the river for our natural shower. The rainy season is tapering off and the river is becoming more friendly, so we are taking advantage of the situation.

You First 🧼

Because we generally take one of everything, the showers usually consist of one of us playfully berating the other for taking too long. We had been standing on the downed tree that plunged our hammock hut into the river, but on this day Monkey-B wanted to try showering directly in the river.

She's mastered the one-legged technique and the squat dunk, but still needs help when her face is full of suds. We've all been there, face full of suds blindly reaching for the ladel, desperately trying to find the water basin for a scoop, or perhaps you just step in front of the showerhead if you have running water.

We Do Have Running Water 🚰

Technically we do have running water I guess, just not from a pipe and not anywhere near the house, also known as a river. If we had installed running water and a hot water shower when we first moved here we'd have missed out on all these dad-daughter adventures to the river. The river is a special place where Monkey-B and I bond and spend time together just the two of us, and this often sparks interesting conversations about life.

The above shot is a typical one, Monkey-B is done with the rag and soap and wants me to take it from her. She wanted to experiment with a new hair-washing technique, so I stood back and watched, hoping she wouldn't tip over like a barrel.

Post-Swim Veggie Burgers 🍔

After we got back up to the house, I made my (humble brag) legendary kofta veggie burgers, and you can see that my Monkey-B was ecstatic about the afterschool activities and eats. I did make 5 burgers and only toasted 4 buns, some bad math brought on from too little sleep.

I put the burger on an untoasted bun and you can see that our youngest food critic was not very happy with this decision. Lucky for me her attempt s at the stare of death usually descend into laughter and cheekiness. Alright, it's 3:04 am, and I thankful to not have to wake up in 2 hours and takes the kids to school, so good night/morning all.
