I woke up this morning to the sound of dumptrucks and an excavator across the street, and we knew this was our chance to get discount dirt.
An Opportune Inopportune Time 🚜

I think I have mentioned in recent posts that we are kind of short on money and sleep at the moment, and the crypto crash happening in the middle of our renovation project has caused us enact austerity measures, making things almost solely funded by HBD and other stablecoins. Well, we had some some erosion damage and problems from the previous owner, and I did my best with a shovel to manage the water drainage, but I was overwhelmed.
The Remote-ness Is Always A Factor 🛩️

In most normal parts of Cambodia, even within a reasonable distance from tiny towns, one can simply order a single truckload of dirt from the local "depot" as they are referred to here in Cambodia. Well, we are in the middle of nowhere on top of a mountain pass, so we knew it would take a massive order to make our place worth visiting.

Luckily in Steung Kach, there is basically one way in and one way out, so no traffic goes through here without passing our house. We keep an eye on the road because there are often sellers of everything from mattresses to clay bean pots and fresh fish passing by. This morning we woke up to see an excavation crew had camped next to our house the previous night.

We greeted them and found out they were doing a big job down the road from us, so we knew this was our chance to get some dirt. It couldn't have been more convenient, because they would be taking the dirt from directly across the street. We found out the price per truckload was $8.25 USD, and began counting our funds.
Double What You Think You Need 🧮

As dirt usually goes, if you think need 20 truckloads, you actually need 40 truckloads, and in our we've used in excess of 40 truckloads already. Pov's brother kept count of the truckloads with a ticket system the crew provided. Even though we need the money for other things, our in-law construction duo said they could wait a little longer for this week's pay because of the financial hit from this day of dirt.

The excavation/backfill crew is going to be around a few days, and they told us they will work with us when they have downtime from the bigger job they are here for. We're letting them sleep at our highway shack, so they've already provided us with a free dump here and there. Out of curiosity, we asked how big of a minimum order it would take to make them come here just for us, and they said at least 200 truckloads. Well, I guess we are fortunate because we need less than 25% of that, so that's why this is an opportune and also inopportune time.
